30/10 Initiative Will Help Create Jobs, Increase Safety and Quality of Life
Washington, DC – Building America’s Future, a bipartisan and national coalition dedicated to bringing about a new era of U.S. investment in infrastructure, today announced their support of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s (D – LA) 30/10 initiative. The 30/10 initiative would accelerate the construction of 12 voter-approved Measure R rail and transit projects in Los Angeles, completing them in 10 years instead of 30.
“Mayor Villaraigosa has set a bold vision that will help increase safety, quality of life and economic competitiveness for the people of Los Angeles and California,” said Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA), co-chair of Building America’s Future. “This is another good example of local governments finding creative ways to fund infrastructure to rebuild their communities and help get Americans back to work.”
"Mayor Villaraigosa is an extraordinary leader because his efforts to win public support for the 30/10 initiative clearly demonstrate that people are willing to pay more for infrastructure that will improve the quality of their lives," said Governor Ed Rendell (D-PA), co-chair of Building America's Future. "This initiative lays out a foundation for smart and responsible infrastructure funding that should inspire other cities beyond Los Angeles and should embolden leaders in Washington to advance sound funding concepts like the National Infrastructure Bank that will help us continue to rebuild America."
“History has taught us that it is not just about investing more money; it’s about investing it in the right places in an efficient and accountable way,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I-NYC), co-chair of Building America’s Future.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa testified Tuesday before the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, chaired by Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), on the need for new transportation financing tools, with the 30/10 initiative as a model for federal-local partnerships.
